The Hoover Dam was built between 1931 and 1936 and was a massive undertaking. Due to the area's isolation, getting supplies and equipment to the construction itself was a challenge. In just five months, the terrain near what is now Lake Mead was forever changed, and a railroad line was built to the construction site.

The railroad was largely abandoned in 1935, and closed for good in 1961, but now the path of the old railroad tracks (including it's five tunnels) is a hiking trail that goes just over 3 1/2 miles from the Lake Mead National Recreation Area's Visitor Center to the Hoover Dam.

On the trail you will find stunning views of Lake Mead, where the evidence of years of drought is very apparent, as you walk back in time, where trains once ran 24 hours a day to bring supplies to the Hoover Dam's construction.

Along the way, the trail passes by the site of Ragtown, a notorious shantytown on the banks of the Colorado River that sprung up during the Great Depression. You can also find leftovers from the dam's construction, including plus for turbines. As you get closer to the dam itself, you get a kind of behind-the-scenes look at the dam, and travel through the Hoover Dam's boneyard.

Hundreds of pounds of brisket, ribs, sausages, and turkey are smoked at this somewhat hidden spot in Kennedale, Texas. Long lines start piling up 5 hours before the place even opens. The decision to construct the Glen Canyon Dam was based on flawed data. Some people would like to see Lake Powell drained, allowing the water to fill Lake Mead first. In this video, we take a look at the current water levels in Lake Powell. Then we discuss the "Fill Mead First" plan. The Fill Lake Mead First plan is a proposed plan to consolidate the water from Lake Powell into Lake Mead. This plan is estimated to save 300,000-600,000 AF annually, but the actual saving is closer to 150,000 AF. Additional studies should be performed to better estimate water losses from both reservoirs. In light of record low water levels at Lake Mead and Powell, maybe it's time to reevaluate this controversial idea.

A lot has changed at Lake Mead every time I have been out there to see the update status level on the water. On my visits I've checked out Hemenway Harbor because it's the only place you can still launch your boat, Callville Bay, Government Wash, Personal Water Craft Beach, several overlook spots and Lake Las Vegas luxury home community being built called "The Island". The visit today showed how much Lake Mead has changed with the water levels dropping so quickly. There is grass now in places that had mud just 1 month ago. The drought continues in southern Nevada and throughout the southwest part of the country. Although the situation looks grim, I did do a video on why Las Vegas is NOT Running Out of Water (Anytime Soon) to show that the Vegas Valley (Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and Boulder City) are in a much better position to handle this water crisis than many other metro areas.

A rare thunderstorm has hit one of the US,s driest city’s in downtown Las Vegas on Thursday night, triggering flash flood warnings.Videos show water pouring into casinos and flooding parts of Las Vegas

Drainage systems were unable to handle the volume of water, with Freemont Street filling with water.

Streets turned into rivers, with water rising into vehicles and blocking traffic.

Casino roofs leaked, with water dripping onto patrons and gaming floors.

In residential areas, flood waters entered homes, with possessions destroyed.

Thunderstorms caused power cuts in some areas, as electricity cables were impacted.

As flood waters subsided, garbage was left washed up in streets.

These floods come days after flash floods affected St Louis, Missouri as well as Eastern Kentucky
